For those of you who haven't stumbled across it yet, Goblinoid Games has a nifty retro-clone product called Labyrinth Lord. As near as I can tell, it's a game mechanic clone of the old Moldvay/Cook basic Dungeons & Dragons game, allowing character development from level 1 through level 20 all in one book. I was skeptical at first, but once I got my fancy hardcover book in my hands (lulu takes sooooo long to do hardcovers!) I was amazed at the fun I held in my hands.
The use of fantasy stock art and classical images helped to give the product a very archaic look and feel - which is just right for the type of genre. I see that later books used a different approach, as reprints seem to include new art commissioned for the product. I personally prefer the classical approach and am pleased to own a copy of the hardbound book just prior to the switch to the new busier cover.
I also downloaded the free version (no art) of the Advanced Edition Characters book - an innovative approach at adding the cool features of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons to the basic Labyrinth Lord product line while maintaining compatibility (which the original produce never attempted).
You can mix and match the two books (LL and AEC) as you wish. In fact, in my LL gaming group (consisting of my kids), I have one Dwarf (that is, the Dwarf character class), one Elf Thief, one Human Monk, and a Halfling. The Dwarf and Halfling are made using the original race-as-class rules from the basic LL book, while the others are made using the rules from the Advanced Edition Characters book. The group functions perfectly with no compatibility issues. I'm really impressed!
As an homage to the product, I've put together a character sheet and have uploaded it to this site for public use. Feel free to print it and use it... and I hope you have hours of old-school fun!
Labyrinth Lord does such a great job of capturing the old gaming feel of the 80's -- especially since it uses the rules from the same game from the 80's!! We at DwD Studios thoroughly enjoy playing the game and have created this great character sheet to help provide the right feel for the game.
This particular sheet is designed for the Advanced Edition Characters version, but can be used in the basic product as well.
All artwork used in this character sheet is in the public domain.
NOTE: I added a second page to this character sheet, which consists of nothing but six boxes with lines in which you can record anything you wish, organized by any method you desire. Some folks like to keep track of spells, others their kills. Some like ot keep track of family and allies (or even enemies). Record whatever you wish on the second page, or don't print it out at all -- your call!

I stumbled across a new FREE fanzine dedicated to Dungeons and Dragons. The first two issues are excellent! I love the layout and the artwork is to game for.
